Summary
The CSA's fourth annual space health event will share the bold vision for positioning Canada as the global leader of deep space healthcare. The Health Beyond Initiative and collaborators aim to leverage healthcare innovation for space exploration missions to the benefit of medically underserved populations on earth. Summit participants can engage in discussion, present their work, and hear about Health Beyond's ongoing activities and upcoming opportunities.
Detailed description
As international space exploration ambitions extend deeper into our solar system, preparations are underway to manage astronaut health throughout missions. People living in remote, northern, or indigenous communities often face common healthcare challenges to astronauts in space, such as limited access to healthcare professionals, specialists, and medical resources, as well as long travel times to fully-equipped hospitals. Long duration missions to farther destinations, like the Moon and Mars, introduce additional challenges that necessitate crew to reduce their dependence on mid-mission support from Earth. This calls for innovative medical technologies to increase crew's medical autonomy and capability.
CSA's Health Beyond Initiative is exploring and supporting Canadian contributions to a redefined astronaut healthcare delivery model for deep space exploration. Through this Initiative, CSA is working closely with interdisciplinary experts and stakeholders across the country, and collaborating with international partners. Together, we are identifying and developing innovative and sustainable health solutions for astronauts in the future that will also benefit Canadians here and now.
The 2022 Health Beyond Summit is an opportunity for CSA to provide an update on the Health Beyond Initiative, and share the strategic vision for how terrestrial and deep space healthcare challenges will be and are being tackled. Members of the research community, industry, government, healthcare system, and academia as well as remote and indigenous healthcare stakeholders are invited to actively participate in interdisciplinary discussions, present their work and perspective, and learn more about the healthcare opportunities that exist for space and Earth.
CSA is committed to fostering a diverse and equitable space health community and innovative ecosystem in Canada. We seek an inclusive event that enriches Canada's contribution to space health and encourage diverse and interdisciplinary participants to join us. This event will be presented in English but all questions can be asked in English or in French.
Objectives
The objectives of the Summit are as follows:
- Inform and excite national stakeholders about Health Beyond's bold vision for Canada's healthcare contributions to future international space exploration
- Present an update on the various activities and funding opportunities under the Health Beyond initiative
- Highlight and facilitate the connection and flow of information between CSA and three key groups in space health: medical operations, the innovation industry, and health science research, framed in the perspective of space exploration and medically-isolated populations.
- Spotlight CSA-funded projects and technologies, and showcase other Canadian space health innovation via calls for presentation proposals
Daily themes
Each day of the Summit focusses on a different theme:
Day 1: Impact
The impact of Health Beyond and healthcare professionals on healthcare advancement for deep space and remote communities.
Day 2: Innovation
New frontiers in the healthcare innovation industry and the development, demonstration, and adoption of novel technologies for space and Canada.
Day 3: Involvement
Avenues of involvement in Health Beyond's bold vision, and the contribution of health science research to Canada's space health network.

Call for presentation proposals
The aim of the Participant Presentations is to facilitate communication between different groups in Canada's space health ecosystem. There will be two categories of participant presentations at the Summit: Healthcare delivery and Technological innovation (described in more detail below). Both Categories will include presentations in the following two formats: a live-stream of pre-recorded videos (~6 minutes each) with potential for live Q&A with presenters, and an interactive electronic poster ("e-poster") session.
We are accepting presentation proposals for both categories and both formats in the form of a summary (150-250 words) on what you intend to present, keeping in mind the discussion points identified under the categories. We will let you know whether your submission is accepted or not and for which format on a rolling basis until the deadline.
Presentation categories
- Healthcare delivery: Participants will present perspective on healthcare delivery particularly in rural, northern, or indigenous communities, or in extreme environments, such as space. This may include discussing: the synergies with space health, the implications of technological innovations on remote healthcare delivery, and potential ways to increase the benefits of future innovations in remote communities and space scenarios from a healthcare perspective.
- Technological innovation: Participants will present on the ideation, research, development and/or adoption of medical and health technology with (potential) application in remote communities and in space. This may include discussing: how to maximize innovation; how their technology assists the delivery of medical care (whether by remote practitioners, astronauts, flight surgeons, citizens, etc.); or pathways/considerations toward facilitating the integration of innovative solutions into communities (such as rural, northern, or indigenous communities). We welcome perspective on bridging part of the gap in understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
