To the International Space Station and beyond

CSA astronaut Joshua Kutryk talks about the International Space Station (ISS) and its importance in terms of science and exploration. The ISS is a key stepping stone for future deep-space missions.

Joshua Kutryk will be the next Canadian to live and work on the ISS. (Credits: Canadian Space Agency, NASA)

Transcript

Joshua Kutryk: The International Space Station is an immensely complex laboratory in outer space. It’s a permanently inhabited lab that we get to send astronauts to as a country, as Canada.

We go there really for two reasons: science and exploration. This is a very unique environment where we can do science, we can make discoveries, we can learn things where we can solve problems to make life better for people here on Earth.

Fundamentally it’s about progressing, it's about going on to the next and the newest, hardest things.

But another part of the reason why we go comes down to exploration, space flight. It’s about taking the impossible and making it possible. It’s about pushing back our collective borders of what we consider to be possible. It’s about doing the really hard things. And on Space Station, we’re doing that.

We’re testing new technologies. We’re evaluating new processes.

We’re doing it all not just so that we can stay on Space Station but so that someday we can go further. We can explore the Moon, and then someday in the decades to come all the way out with humans to that little red planet that we call Mars.
