Jeremy Hansen: I’m standing here at Ellington Airfield in Houston, Texas. This is where we do our flight training for the astronaut corps.
Behind me is the T-38 jet aircraft that we’ve been using as long as I’ve been here, actually, since the Apollo era, to train astronauts. And the reason we use these airplanes is because they’re challenging. We can have two astronauts in the cockpit together, working as a team, just like we do in a spacecraft.
And we have so many amazing simulators here at the Johnson Space Center, but none of those simulators will kill you, but this will. And that is one of the benefits of this training is that we are managing real risk preparing us to go to space.
