Bogor, Java, Indonesia - December 29, 1995

About 200 km south of the city of Jakarta, the twin volcanoes (bottom right) of Gunung Gede-Pangrango rise 2,000-3,000 metres above sea level. While Mount Pangrango, the older of the two, no longer displays any sign of volcanic activity, Gede is still semi-active with a well-defined crater. To the left of Mt. Salak is another active volcano. Rain has eroded the forest-covered flanks of the volcanoes, producing steep-ridged valleys that stretch towards the plains and the city of Bogor (upper centre).
