Summary
Since , International Moon Day has been celebrated on to commemorate the anniversary of the first human landing on the Moon with the Apollo 11 mission. If you are interested in learning more about lunar exploration activities, a variety of events will be held around the world and online under the theme "Illuminating the Shadows."
Detailed description
Countries from around the world are getting ready to send humans farther into our solar system, beyond the International Space Station. Nearly 400,000 km away from our planet, the Moon represents a crucial steppingstone in humanity's quest to travel onwards to Mars.
Canada is taking part in this exciting new chapter of space exploration, notably by:
- contributing a robotic system known as Canadarm3 for Gateway, a small space station that will orbit the Moon
- having a Canadian Space Agency astronaut, Jeremy Hansen, onboard the historic Artemis II mission to the Moon
- developing a science rover and a utility rover to explore the lunar surface
